To år før kulminationen på 68-bevægelsens globale opbrudsstemning mod den etablerede samfundsorden fandt de første omfattende anti-racistiske oprør sted i USA. Afroafrikanernes demonstrationer mod den daglige , institutionaliserede racisme mundede ud i deciderede opstande i ghettoerne i Los Angeles (California) og Cleveland (Ohio).
I juli 1967 udbrød de undertrykte sortes revolte i Newark (New Jersey), som blev blodigt slået ned af firetusinde nationalgardister (paramilitære styrker som er specialiseret i opstandsbekæmpelse) og regulære politistyrker. Ifølge forskellige kilder blev 27 sorte dræbt og 1100 såret ved denne konfrontation. Denne begivenhed samt den dramatisk tilspidsede sociale og juridiske diskriminering af USAs afro-afrikanske befolkning førte til opstande i mere end hundrede byer, spredt over hele USA.
Den 20.- 24.juli 1967 mødtes onkring tusinde afro-afrikanske delegerede til en Black-Power-konference i Newark. Formålet var at koordinere landsdækkende aktions – og boykotkampagner. Under konferencens sidste dage udbrød heftige antiracistiske riots i Detroit (Michigan). 16.000 politistyrker og nationalgardister bekæmpede opstanden på gaden med røgbomber, nervegas, gummiprojektiler, tanks og en helvedes masse helikoptere. Politistyrkerne dræbte 41 og sårede mindst 2000 mennesker. Over 4000 aktivister blev anholdt og varetægsfængslet.
For at beskytte demonstranterne for det væbnede overvejende racistiske politi blandede væbnede grupper fra Black Panther – bevægelsen sig i de borgerkrigsagtige konfrontationer.
