This morning a 'People's Platform' is demonstrating at the Bella Centre against the silencing of civil society in the climate talks.

People's Platform: Civil Society Protests at Bella Centre metro

This morning a ‘People's Platform' will demonstrate against the silencing of civil society both inside and outside the UN negotiations. The undemocratic nature of the process is completely against the spirit of the UN, which should be inclusive of the voices of the people.

WHERE: 10am, Bella Centre Metro Station

The ‘People's Platform,' overlooking the Bella Centre, will include voices of people whose lives are in jeopardy because of climate change, the most crucial issue of our time.

Campaigner Kirsty Wright of the World Development Movement said:

"Civil society is being locked out of the talks. Inside
negotiations, registered delegates are denied entry. And outside the talks, protestors are subject to unprovoked police brutality and violence. But attempts to silence us have just strengthened us. We are now connected and stronger. This is an historic moment in the history of
global justice, of the Global North and South uniting together for climate justice".

Dorothy Guerrero from Focus on the Global South said: "The UN process has been a failure. It is against the spirit of the UN; it has been undemocratic, with bullying on the inside and repression of our rights. The people of the global south are particularly being silenced. And inside southern nations are subject to bullying and civil society is not there to cry out. This is the beginning of global solidarity for Climate Justice. With or without the negotiations, an inclusive movement that brings together the aspirations of communities in both the north and the
south is growing to find just and equitable solutions to the climate
crisis."
