I april 1970 udvidede Nixon Vietnamkrigen til Cambodia. Ved de efterfølgende protestdemonstrationer blev på Kent State universitet i Ohio Nationalgarden sat ind og fire studenter blev dræbt.

Ronald Reagan havde nogle uger tidligere udtalt:"Hvis der kræves et blodbad (for at gøre op med krigsmodstanden), så lad os få det overstået".

I ethvert land er det et afgørende skred når regeringen begynder at skyde på befolkningen.
Ceaucescu faldt med det samme - Nixon holdt fire år endnu - med flere millioner døde som resultat.

Nixon var blevet valgt i 1968 på løfter om at afslutte krigen, men han fortsatte.
I marts 1970 væltede USA styret i det neutrale Cambodia gennem et kup, og i slutningen af april sendte man tropper ind.
Protester mod krigen rejste sig over hele USA.
På Kent State University i Ohio blev Nationalgarden den 4. maj sat ind mod demonstranterne, og 4 blev dræbt, og et stort antal såret.
To uger senere blev yderligere to studenter dræbt i Jackson, Mississippi.
Der fulgte voldsomme demonstrationer i Washington, Nixon måtte flytte til Camp David, og militær blew flyttet ind i det Hvide Hus.

"The 82nd Airborne was in the basement of the executive office building, so I went down just to talk to some of the guys and walk among them, and they're lying on the floor leaning on their packs and their helmets and their cartridge belts and their rifles cocked and you're thinking, 'This can't be the United States of America. Folk som oplevede det mistede ethvert håb om en demokratisk forandring.

Et par uger i forvejen havde Reagan udtalt til en journalist:"Hvis det kræver et blodbad (at få gjort op med krigsmodstanden), så lad os få det overstået."

De ansvarlige i Nixon-administrationen - bl a. Rumsfeld, Cheney og Alexander Haig - fortsatte - og kom igen i senere republikanske administrationer
Den nuværende forsvarsminister - Robert Gates - beslutningstagende i Afghanistan - som i 1980erne var ansvarlig for en del af USAs krige i Latinamerika - var også med allerede i Nixon-administrationen.
