Næsten upåagtet af de vestlige medier har befolkningen i verdens fattigste lande med demonstrationer og riots gjort opmærksom på deres yderst prækere situation. I mange vestafrikanske storbyer, i Haiti, Indonesien og Ægypten kom det til heftige konfrontationer mellem de fattige protesterende og politistyrker. Først da det ægyptiske anti-riotpoliti i søndags, d. 6.april, brutalt undertrykte en planlagt generalstrejke i landet, kom de globale sulterevolter på mediernes forsider.
Politiet i kamp mod strejkende arbejdere i Mahalla, Ægypten
Som led i generalstrejken kom det i søndags i den nordægyptiske industriby Mahalla el Cobra til voldsomme konfrontationer mellem strejkende tekstilarbejdere og ægyptisk riotpoliti. Ifølge internationale medieberetninger anvendte politiet tåregas og skød med gummikugler mod de aktionerende. Omkring 100 mennesker blev såret og over 200 blev anholdt. Ifølge rygter skulle også mindst 4 strejkende være blevet skudt af politiet.
De strejkende arbejdere satte sig til modværge ved at overdænge politiet med teglsten og standse al togtrafik ved at etablere blokader. I samtlige ægyptiske storbyer kom det til lignende kampe og det lykkedes kun delvis for politiet at undertrykke strejken. Baggrunden for oprøret er, at prisforhøjelserne på de vigtigste grundernæringsmidler og på brændstof i den sidste måneds tid er steget med næsten 100 procent.
Noget lignende har gjort sig gældende i mange vestafrikanske lande, hvis fælles valuta er koblet til EUs Euro. Det drejer sig ifølge FN-organisationen WFP (World Food Programme) først og fremmest om lande som Ægypten, Haiti, Burkina Faso, Indonesien, Elfenbenkysten, Somalia, Mauretanien, Moçambique, Senegal, Camerun, Marokko, Guinea og Guinea-Bissau.
WFP har ved en pressekonference i Rom i mandags opfordret den internationale offentlighed til at støtte specielt Haiti, et af verdens fattigste lande. Her revolterede flere tusinde fattige i sidste uge mod prisforhøjelser og fattigdom. Kampene med politiet kostede også her fire mennesker livet. WPF-repræsentant Josette Sheeran appelerede til en massiv international støtte for at komme befolkningen i Haiti og de andre lande, som er stærkest ramt af prisforhøjelserne, til undsætning. Hun henviste til den globalt stigende fattigdom og svigtende købekraft: ”Vi bliver konfronteret med den nye sults ansigt: Selv om der findes alle de nødvendige fødevarer på hylderne, er der flere og flere mennesker, som ikke har råd til dem.”
Idag, tirsdag d. 8.april, er der indkaldt til generalstrejke og demonstrationer i Burkina Faso. Protesterne, der allerede i marts eskalerede i Elfenbenkystens hovedstad Abidjan og i Senegals hovedstad Dakar, går ind i sin næste fase. I mange især afrikanske lande hersker der en ubredt angst for nye sultekatastrofer som i 1980`erne og 90`erne. De fattige går på gaden for at protestere mod misforholdet mellem rige og fattige i deres respektive lande.
